The general narrative of the game is nebulous, but intriguing and thought-provoking. it is all so believable, and despite the game’s bizarre setting, it still feels very real. The camera angles, the elaborate machinery and worn-down architecture, the nuanced movements and adjustments of the characters. ![]() Many great film auteurs are known for their fastidious attention to detail that allows them to execute their unique vision. Between the leaves that slowly and silently fall from the distant trees in the forest to the natural light shining through the windows of the game’s decrepit industrial buildings, every visual detail in every scene has intention and purpose.Īs I played through Inside, I couldn’t help but think of a term that is used in film: mise-en-scène, which can be best described as everything that makes up the composition and feel of a film that lends credibility to its world (e.g., the photography, the costumes, the set design, et cetera… virtually everything on screen). In spite of its dark, foreboding atmosphere, the ambiance is very much alive. Its lowly saturated colors are dull and striking at the same time, with red being the only bright color. I was instantly struck by the game’s unique style and muted colors. In a short time, you find yourself asking where you are, who the boy is, and if he can find a way to escape this nightmare. In your efforts to escape, it becomes apparent that these masked men and their henchmen appear to be running some sort of human trafficking ring or internment camp, populated by faceless men, all dressed in neutral colors. Within minutes, you realize that you are not alone: trucks carrying armed masked men and vicious dogs are out to hunt you down. You play as a red-shirted boy, the silent protagonist of the game, who finds himself in a dark forest with no sound but the faint pattering of his own feet. ![]() There is no title screen, no explanation of the controls, and no instructions you are instantly immersed in its dark and dreary world. When you launch Inside, the game begins immediately. While Inside’s gameplay is very similar to Limbo’s, its visual style and unique setting really sets it apart. Playdead’s Inside is a side-scrolling puzzle platformer by the makers of Limbo, a beautifully somber, critically-acclaimed game that is best known for its eerie, monochromatic visuals and unique puzzles. I finished Inside this weekend, and it was one of the most beautiful games I’ve ever played.
